“So they set up the altar on its foundation, for they were terrified because of the peoples of the lands; and they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, burnt offerings morning and evening. ” Ezra 3:3
As the early captives returned to Jerusalem, they found the city in ruins. The City wall had been torn down and the Temple had been razed. When they finally gathered together, what was the 1st thing that they did? They rebuilt the Altar and restored the daily sacrifices. And why do this first? Yes, we are told “they were terrified”. So why not create a Fortress and organize as a Militia? Because they knew God would protect them as they made Him and His worship primary in their lives.
Essentially, Jesus has told us the same thing; “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”!
